California-based Fireman's Fund Insurance still exists today and provides coverage to individuals and businesses all over the world. Today the company is owned by the German firm Allianz.
Fireman's Fund was named for an early arrangement in the firm's history when it paid 10% of its profits to the widows and orphans of firefighers. It no longer strictly tithes 10% though the corporate website boasts that the company still maintains a social mission to proved support to fire departments across the country.
The company issued the world's first airplane policy.
