New York Stock Brokers: Henry W. Poor and Charles E. Berner of H. W. Poor & Company

Henry W. Poor, above, is the very same Poor of the current S&P Index, or Standard & Poor's Index.  He was well known for his Poor's Manual, which I rely upon to sort out railroad cancels during the 1898 tax period.  The artist has him holding a Poor's Man and Womanual in his right hand.

Charles Berner must have been a sportsman who kep himself jacked according the artist.

New York Stock Brokers: William C. Van Antwerp of Payne & Van Antwerp

The dapper William C. Van Antwerp, above, spent the middle years of the 1898 tax period at the New York Stock Exchange in partnership in a firm with his own name.  By 1902 the Payne & Van Antwerp partnership broke up and he went to the firm E. R. Chapman.  The Van Antwerp above may be found in The Stock Market in Caricature, 1904.

New York Stock Brokers: Jay F. Carlisle of James H. Oliphant & Company and A. M. Kidder & Company

Jay F. Carlisle started the 1898 tax period with A. M. Kidder but spent most of the years with Mr. Oliphant's company.  Not sure why he's pictured on a horse with wheels the way he is, but I am sure that he made money in sugar, probably through the company American Sugar.  The horse and Mr. Carlisle may be found in The Stock Exchange in Caricature, 1904, V2.

New York Stock Brokers: Charles E. Knoblauch of A. R. Pick & Company and Noble & Mestre

Chas. Knoblauch, riding the bull and bear, started the 1898 tax period at the firm A. R. Pick; he spent the majority of the tax period with Noble & Mestre.  He must have had a cowboy-like reputation on the stock exchange.  This is one of the more fulsome and active characterizations in The Stock Exchange in Caricature, 1904, V2.

New York Stock Brokers: Robert C. Nicholas of Harry I. Nicholas & Company

Robert C. Nicholas, above, acquired his seat at the New York Stock Exchange during the tax period.  I suspect he was Harry's son.  Harry is in the photo below.  I'm not really sure what the image is at the upper left, but it appears as if Robert might have shot a plucked and decapitated chicken.  You can scrutinize the chicken(?) at The Stock Exchange in Caricature, 1904, V2.

New York Stock Brokers: Leopold Newborg of Newborg, Rosenberg & Company

Leopold Newborg, above, acquired his seat at the NYSE by mid to late 1900, when his partnership with Mr. Hess came into existence.  I need to understand why ticker machines at the turn of the century were often shown with a glass bell covering them.  Mr. Newborg may be found in The Stock Exchange in Caricature, 1904, V2.

New York Stock Brokers: John Muir of John Muir & Company

John Muir began the 1898 tax period at Price, McCormick, and finished it at his own, self-named firm.  Mr. Muir's rather imperious personation may be found at The Stock Exchange in Caricature, 1904, V2.

New York Stock Brokers: Sidney Schieffelin Schuyler of Mendham Brothers and Payne, Schuyler & Company

Based on the drawing I suspect that Mr. Schuyler had a rather loud or screachy voice, or perhaps both.  Sidney became a member of the NYSE during the 1898 tax period, beginning at the firm Payne, Schuyler, but concluding the tax period in 1902 with Mendahm Brothers.  The caricature may be found at The Stock Exchange in Caricature, 1904, V2.

New York Stock Brokers: Arthur M. Lawrence and William R. White of White & Barton

Arthur M. Lawrence, from The Stock Exchange in Caricature. Lawrence moved around during the tax period, and also traded from J. S. Bache in 1898 and from Lawrence, Tauchert in 1902

William R. White was based at his self-named firm with Charles Barton for the full 1898 tax period.

New York Stock Brokers: Henry G. Hahlo

Henry G. Hahlo in The Stock Market in Caricature, 1904 V2. Henry would go into business with his brother, Hugo, and create Hahlo Brothers.  We're looking for a Hahlo Bros cancel or memo?
