July 1, 1898: First Day of Use for 1898 Series Tax Stamps

The 1898 War Revenue Tax Law officially kicked of the tax party on July 1, 1898.  The BEP quickly designed and began to print new stamps for that purpose, but also overprinted postage stamps to help fill the spike in demand as the taxes came in to force.  Today features a few examples of the I. R. overprinted postage stamps, cancelled on July 1, 1898.
